Questions & Answers
Frequently Asked Questions About 200 Amp Underground Meter Can Installation and Replacement in Crete, IL
When should a 200-amp underground meter can be replaced?
Replacement may be appropriate when the enclosure is significantly corroded, physically damaged, deteriorated around conductor entries, or unsuitable for the intended service configuration. Visible overheating or water intrusion also warrants prompt professional evaluation because the underlying connections may require attention.
Can a new 200-amp meter can connect to existing underground service conductors?
Existing conductors may be reusable if their condition, size, insulation, termination compatibility, and suitability for the service are established. The underground route and utility connection must also be considered. A replacement enclosure alone does not resolve deficiencies in the existing conductors.
What is the difference between a meter can and a meter main?
A meter can primarily houses the meter socket and related metering connections. A meter main combines metering equipment with a main disconnect and, depending on its configuration, may include distribution breakers. The appropriate equipment depends on the property's electrical layout and service requirements.
Does replacing an underground meter can require utility coordination?
Yes, coordination is commonly necessary because the meter equipment connects to utility-supplied service conductors and must accommodate the utility's metering requirements. The process may involve scheduling disconnection and reconnection, confirming the replacement equipment, and establishing any inspection or authorization steps.
What should be evaluated before meter can replacement in Crete, IL?
The evaluation should cover enclosure dimensions, meter socket configuration, service rating, underground conductor condition, mounting surface, weather exposure, and the location of the main disconnect. The serving utility's equipment specifications should also be reviewed before selecting a replacement meter can.
